Greg writes to ask: I was wondering if you could help with county of origin labels. Notably, is there a way to tell quality from a ‘made in’ label? For example, I’ve seen labels that say “Assembled in America from Imported Materials” and “Made by American Craftsmen” and “Tailored in the USA.” Are there any people looking for a good deal should watch for? Avoid? “Made by tiny hands in a US protectorate,” for example?

Express has a new fall line with some items bearing the name, “Minus the…” PETA gave them a little progress award for this “Minus the…” leather and fur line. I’m down. As a vegan, clothing’s the hardest place to avoid animal product use. However, veganism has made me mindful of other factors in production like human labor rights. I don’t know how Express ranks up there but I’m guessing pretty low so even though they’ve got some good animal practices I still wouldn’t do much shopping there. Maybe I’m wrong?
